Terroir

Located at the confluence of the Dordogne and Isle rivers, Fronsac is a renowned wine-growing region on the right bank of Bordeaux. Its temperate oceanic climate, tinged with Mediterranean nuances, is a true gift of nature.

Topography

The vineyards are spread across hills, high plateaus, and gently rolling slopes. This type of terrain not only provides good drainage but also allows the vines to fully benefit from sunlight, thus promoting the ripening of the grapes.

Climate

A temperate oceanic climate with warm but not stifling summers and mild winters with moderate humidity, ideal for growing Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec.

Soil

Soil conditions are central to viticulture and wine quality, and the soils of Richelieu are characterized by their diversity, encompassing various types of clay-limestone, clay-siliceous, and sandy loam.

This diversity of soils and geology gives the wine a complexity of flavors and a unique character, revealing the very essence of the Fronsac appellation's terroir. Each wine is a unique expression, born from the harmony between soil, climate, and winemaking expertise, highlighting the exceptional potential of this terroir.

Environmental
approach

Environmentally friendly viticulture

We have opted for mechanical soil cultivation and therefore completely avoid the use of chemical herbicides. Ground cover is managed sensibly parcel by parcel, as is the establishment of sowings, which provide our soils with green manure, an ideal microbial life, and beneficial fauna for our vineyard. Green work (pruning, wood pulling, bending, shoot thinning, trellising, lifting) is carried out manually by our team. Our approach is largely empirical and is informed by observation of our plots and reflection throughout the seasons.

We believe that the land is a unique and invaluable treasure; as the seasons change, the vineyard plots are transformed. Each vineyard is cultivated organically, adapted to the characteristics of the soil, the different grape varieties, and the age of the vines. In this way, Château de Richelieu perpetuates its sacred commitment to respecting the terroir.

The Dual Concept of Vine Cultivation

To preserve the land and the plant, but also to think as a responsible winemaker towards the terroir, the people who work it, and the residents who live near it. Château Richelieu follows an organic farming approach .

We do not weed, we do not use chemical products. We use contact products that do not penetrate the plant and we do not use herbicides.
